Several research projects have gotten underway recently which may have future implications for the quarry industry. A batter stability research project has been launched by the Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio to improve safety in open-cut mines. A joint venture between quarry explosives supplier Orica, the University of Newcastle and a Canberra based company – GreenMag Group have formed the Mineral Carbonation International (MCI). They have commenced operation of a carbon conversion reactor in New South Wales.  (Source: Quarry Magazine)

Worker seriously injured in fall from articulated dump truck.
A plant operator was preparing to unload a Volvo A30 articulated dump truck that was transported to site on a low loader. During preparation, the operator accessed the top of the right front wheel arch to adjust the side mirror. After making the adjustment, the operator turned and walked toward the access steps where he fell to ground level. The operator suffered a skull fracture in the fall. The Secretariat is currently undertaking a project involving photos and aerial videos of old quarry sites which have exhausted their materials and been completely rehabilitated into park lands, farming, housing….etc.

We are after your input to advise us of such sites especially ones which you have been involved in and maybe able to provide us with old photos of the quarry when it was in operation.

We would like to identify at least 10 sites / locations if possible.

The report into options for rehabilitating Latrobe Valley coal mines and the rehabilitation bond system was today tabled in Parliament. It is the final of four reports of the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry, which the Andrews Labor Government reopened last year to get to the bottom of community health, safety and environmental concerns that were ignored by the former Coalition Government. An employer that failed to provide and maintain safe systems of work after an employee slipped on a ladder and suffered burns from hot tallow has been fined $40,000. The County Court of Victoria ruled that the Laverton pet food manufacturer breached the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 because it did not monitor and enforce staff training.

Collision between front-end loader and light vehicle
A Caterpillar 992 front end loader reversed into a light vehicle that entered a coal stockpile work area. The dual cab Toyota Hilux was damaged but the light vehicle operator was not injured. (Source: MinEx Bulletin)
