In July 2014 a mobile crane at a mine site was being used to unload a truck. After a daily pre-start inspection the crane took the weight and lifted the load. As the crane started to slew, the nylon head sleeve (rooster sheave) weighing about 2kg , catastrophically failed. (Source: Government of WA – Department of Mines and Petroleum Resources Safety).

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are a serious health concern for the mining and extractives industries. Musculoskeletal injuries account for more than 40 per cent of workers compensation claims. NSW Department of Industry, Resources and Energy provides an overview of Musculoskeletal disorders on their website.

According to the Queensland Mines and Quarries Safety Performance and Health Report, the number of lost time injuries (LTIs) across the state’s entire mining sector (ie quarries, and coal and metalliferous mines) for the year ended 30 June, 2015 fell from 361 in 2013–14 to 296 in 2014–15. This annual publication reports on the safety and health performance of the Queensland mining industry. The report is based on data collected from the Queensland mining industry and analysed by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines. (Source: Qld Govt Website)
